Event – Urban Connectivity – the demand and the challenges
Urban Connectivity: The Demand and the Challenges
12 October 2016 10.00-17.00
techUK, 10 St Bride St, London, EC4A 4AD
The UK’s cities are determining factors in our economic well-being, helping to drive growth and create jobs. By their nature they require resilient, high capacity and high quality infrastructure. This applies to digital communication networks as much as it does to transport infrastructure. Indeed, it may shortly matter more.
Businesses increasingly demand more from their digital connections as they do and rely more on it. Similarly, employees and citizens view connectivity as a necessity to engage fully with society. In a globalised world, it is a competitive differentiator.
Driving out superfast broadband coverage to rural areas is critically important but we cannot forget that a fifth of the hardest to reach areas are in urban areas, nor that digital networks allow services to be delivered in a smarter, more efficient manner. This is particularly important in order to balance the demands that cities, with their condensed populations, place on its infrastructure and services. Across transport systems, social care delivery or retail, digital technology offers us the potential to live better quality lives in a more inclusive and informed community.
Underpinning all of this potential is connectivity.
The UK starts from a strong position with cities generally benefiting from multiple infrastructure and retail providers. However substantial challenges remain, including: broadband not-spots, wireless coverage and in-building connectivity, delays in the ability to connect buildings and deploy infrastructure. These challenges will increase as we demand more connectivity and we move towards an Internet of Things and 5G enabled world.
The BSG and techUK are teaming up to explore these issues. We will bring together experts and decision makers from both the central and local Government, and technology and service providers across the above range of digital sectors to discuss the challenges of infrastructure deployment, the urban economic and social demand, and examine future innovative solutions which will allow services to be delivered in a smarter, more efficient manner.
The Agenda for this event will be available shortly.
